New heat recovery and ventilation system launches

Intelivent is the latest ventilation system to launch on the market offering a sustainable, efficient and healthy airflow, temperature control and moisture reduction throughout the home.

Following a decade of research and development by New Plymouth engineers, independent tests have confirmed that Intelivent’s heat exchanger thermal efficiency can reach 97% under typical conditions.

Unlike most other ventilation systems on the market, Intelivent’s innovative heat exchanger system captures and recycles heat energy from stale air that is being expelled from the home and transfers this heat energy to dry, filtered, fresh air that is being supplied to the home.

A micro-processor continuously monitors temperatures around the home and automatically determines the optimal speed to run the system’s twin fans to achieve the healthiest and most comfortable air flow strategy.

A User Interface allows the occupants to set the desired temperature for the home – as well as giving clear and concise feedback on the status of the Intelivent system.

The result is a system that assists in achieving the World Health Organisation’s recommended minimum internal air temperature of 18 degrees Celsius – and also enables the home to meet the New Zealand Standard NZS 4303-1990 minimum of eight changes of air in a dwelling every 24 hours.

One of the important health benefits of the system is the high-grade EU4 filter through which the  incoming air is supplied which can greatly reduce, and in some cases, totally eliminate air born pollutants such as fungal spores, pollen, off-gassing from building materials and dust mite dander.

Minimising the spread of dust mites, and creating a dry, warm atmosphere is also a major benefit says Hayden Wells, the Business Development Manager of Entuition – the company who has developed Intelivent for the market.

“New Zealand has some alarming statistics which can be attributed to our living in cold, damp homes with poor ventilation,” says Mr. Wells.

Un-insulated homes can lose up to 88% of their generated heat through the ceiling, walls, doors and windows. In addition, damp air costs more to heat than dry air. By comparison, with operation costs as low as two cents an hour, Intelivent will help save money on energy costs because it is providing fresh, dry air into rooms which therefore require less energy to heat.

And customer feedback is showing what a relief Intelivent can be for damp and cold homes. Tony and Tracey Hopkins installed an Intelivent system in their New Plymouth home just before the winter of 2007.

“We installed Intelivent because our home felt damp in the winter in particular - with heavy condensation on the windows and mildew on the curtains,” explains Tracey.

“One of our children suffers from asthma and allergies and would often wake up in winter coughing and sneezing. So we needed to do something even though the house was insulated.

“Immediately after we installed the Intelivent system, the condensation stopped and the house felt drier and warmer. We also noticed a dramatic reduction in dust and dust mites. Our daughter didn’t suffer from asthma as badly as well. Our log fire now heats the whole house a lot faster with a more even ambient temperature rather than just being hot in the lounge and cold everywhere else.”

Tracy also reports that the home is not stifling as it used to be after being shut up on a summer’s day.
