Solid Wood - Sustainable, Stylish and Strong!

by Intalok - Solid Timber Buildings Ltd

When you build in natural solid timber you build a positive future for yourself, for future generations and for our planet.  Trees are essential in the fight against global warming.  They absorb carbon dioxide as they grow and store it safely even after they are harvested.  And, wood is the only building material that is fully recyclable.

About New Zealand’s Pine Forests
Not all forests are made equal.  Intalok natural timber buildings use radiata pine grown in sustainably managed New Zealand forests.  New Zealand pine forests have the advantage of climatic conditions that foster fast, efficient growth.  They are grown using sustainable management practises based on comprehensive research.  The result speaks for itself:

  • Seven percent of New Zealand’s land is in plantation forest – that’s 1.6 million hectares.  A staggering 23% of the country’s land is in natural native forest and most of this is protected for future generations.
  • New Zealand production forests are highly productive, supplying 1.1% of the world’s forest products from just 0.05% of the world’s forest resource.
  • In 2000, New Zealand’s plantation forests absorbed some 25 million tonnes of CO2.  New Zealand forests planted since 1990 are expected to remove 150 million tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere – that’s worth as much as $2.5 billion in international carbon markets.

Natural Wood Performance
Surrounding yourself in natural wood is just like wrapping yourself in Merino wool.  Wood is breathable, naturally strong, easy to care for and slower to burn than synthetic fibres.  If you are not already in love with natural timber buildings you, just think on this:

  • Solid wood buildings breathe, so they do not suffer ‘leaky building’ syndrome.
  • Wood homes absorb and repel moisture to maintain stable humidity in your home.
  • Solid wood burns at 0.6mm per minute - much slower than synthetic alternatives.
  • Wood is a low maintenance product that does not mark or stain easily.
  • With a high strength to weight ratio well constructed solid wood buildings can withstand extreme environmental pressure.

Natural Wood Sustainability
If you love wood for no other reason, love it because it is naturally renewable, recyclable and biodegradable.
